CashKO, the microinsurance arm of RuralNet, has expanded its calamity coverage nationwide, and the timing tracks the need. NDRRMC data shows about 7.5 million people affected by the combined impact of cyclones Luis, Maymay, Neneng, and this year’s habagat monsoon, and a 2024 survey found 87% of microfinance borrowers wanted calamity protection, per CashKO Insurance Brokerage CEO Justin Arcenas, speaking at the 2026 MCPI conference. Beyond the human toll, the same disasters raise repayment risk for microfinance institutions, since an entire borrower base can be affected at the same time.
Consumers don’t buy the coverage directly from CashKO. It’s distributed through partner microfinance institutions using RuralNet’s API-based platform, which lets each lender set its own coverage terms, payout thresholds, and how the policy ties into a borrower’s loan, a “made-to-measure” setup the company built after an earlier pilot that paid out claims following Typhoons Tino and Uwan. Right now, what’s covered is indemnity insurance only, meaning a payout requires proof: policyholders submit photos and documentation of home damage, which CashKO verifies before releasing funds, typically around PHP 5,000.
Tying each payout to a verified loss keeps the process fair and auditable, but it comes with a trade-off in speed, since the volume of individual claims to review can climb quickly when a large-scale disaster hits, which is part of why CashKO is adding a second product.
That product, a parametric option, launches in Q4. Instead of an individual damage assessment, payouts will trigger automatically once a defined disaster threshold — a typhoon category, an earthquake magnitude — is confirmed via satellite and ground-station data, a design meant for speed during large-scale disasters, when assessing every affected home individually isn’t practical.
Whether it actually helps is already showing up in real claims. Masbate City teacher Joy Verano says her post-Opong payout let her cover priority needs immediately — “Iyong pera na ibinigay sa amin, nabili agad namin ng priority at pangangailangan ng pamilya ko,” she said, adding that without the assistance she would have had nothing else to rely on.

As Arcenas put it, “Our goal is to ensure that a calamity does not become a setback that pushes families further into financial hardship.” Since 2019, CashKO has reached 6 million-plus underserved Filipinos and approved 33,000-plus claims, over 16,000 in 2025 alone.
